Is Umax accurate?

Umax's listing does not explain how its ratings are calculated, and any photo-based score shifts with lighting, angle and camera distance. Treat a Umax rating as one opinion, not a verdict.

Beautify is our app, and it is also a face rating app, so weigh our take accordingly. We have not tested Umax and do not report any test results here. Every fact about Umax below comes from its own App Store listing and website, checked in October 2026, and the research we mention is named so you can look it up. The same limits we describe apply to every face rating app, including ours.

What does Umax say it does?

Umax says it rates your face from a selfie. Its App Store listing, under the subtitle “Get your ratings”, describes the process as “1) Download the app 2) Take a selfie 3) Get your analysis”. It also says:

  • “If you want to become more attractive, Umax will help you get there faster than anybody else.”
  • “We will provide you with the tools and information to begin your self improvement journey.”
  • “We are the looksmax AI tool to help YOU looksmax.”
  • “We do not offer medical advice. Any and all recommendations should be viewed as suggestions, please consult with a professional and do your own research before doing something new.”

Umax’s website adds one line: “Unlock your maximum potential.”

Does Umax explain how its ratings are calculated?

No, Umax’s listing and website do not describe its method, its rating scale or which facial features it scores. That matters for the accuracy question: without a published method, a reader cannot check what a Umax rating is based on or how it was validated. This is common in the category, so it is not a criticism unique to Umax.

What can a face rating app actually measure?

A face rating app can measure what is visible in one photo, and nothing else. From an image, software can locate features and compare their positions, proportions and symmetry, and estimate things like skin evenness in that lighting. It then maps those measurements to a score based on whatever data and rules it was built with.

What no photo-based app can measure:

  • How you look in person, in motion, from other angles, or with different expressions.
  • Attractiveness itself, which varies between people and cultures and is not a single fixed number.
  • Anything about your health, which is why these apps, Umax included, say they are not medical advice.

Why do Umax scores change between photos?

Scores change because the photo changes, even when your face does not. Two published findings show how much a photo can shift:

  • Camera distance distorts features. A 2018 research letter in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery (Ward and colleagues, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School) estimated that a selfie taken about 12 inches from the face makes the nose base look roughly 30% wider than a photo taken from about 5 feet away.
  • Different photos of the same person read differently. In a study published in Psychological Science, Alexander Todorov and Jenny Porter found that impressions of the same person, including attractiveness, varied about as much between different photos of that person as between different people.

Lighting, head tilt, lens, expression and filters add more variation. A rating is a reading of one image, so a different image can give a different reading.

Is Umax legit?

Umax is a real, published app: it is sold by Improvement Tech LLC on the App Store and on Google Play, and it has 4.6 stars from about 51,600 ratings on the US App Store (October 2026). A few facts are useful before you pay:

  • Pricing model: free to download, but “analysis results require subscription. Additional scans require additional purchase.” The in-app purchases include weekly and monthly premium plans and one-off items called “Supercharge” and “You as a 10/10”.
  • Update history: its last App Store update was version 1.4.3, on June 28, 2024.
  • Age rating: 18+ on the App Store listing.

“Legit” and “accurate” are different questions. Umax is a genuine product; whether its ratings mean much is something its public material does not let anyone verify.

How can you get more consistent results from any face rating app?

Consistency comes from keeping the photo the same each time. These habits help with Umax or any similar app:

  1. Hold the phone at arm’s length or further, at eye level, not below the chin.
  2. Face the camera straight on with a relaxed, closed-mouth expression.
  3. Use soft, even light, such as facing a window, and avoid harsh overhead light.
  4. Remove filters, beauty modes and anything covering your face.
  5. Compare scores only between photos taken the same way.

How does Beautify compare?

Beautify faces the same limits: it reads one photo and returns eight scores out of 100 (Overall, Potential, Skin Quality, Facial Symmetry, Eyes, Nose, Lips and Cheekbones), and we do not claim those scores are accurate or scientific. What it adds is context for the scores: your face shape, eye shape and skin type, each with tips, plus a step-by-step Glow Up Guide. Beautify is iPhone only, and results need a weekly subscription. Bottom line

Umax’s accuracy cannot be checked from the outside, because its listing does not explain how ratings are made, and any photo-based score moves with distance, light and angle. Use a Umax rating, or any app’s rating, as a rough reading of one photo, take photos the same way each time, and do not treat the number as a measure of your worth.

Questions people ask

Is Umax accurate?

There is no public way to check. Umax's App Store listing does not describe how its ratings are calculated or what scale they use, and any photo-based rating changes with lighting, angle, distance and expression.

Is Umax legit?

Umax is a real app published by Improvement Tech LLC on the App Store and Google Play. Being a real product is separate from whether its ratings are meaningful, which its listing does not explain.

Why does Umax give me a different score on different photos?

Because the input changes. Camera distance, lens, lighting, head angle and expression all change how a face appears in a photo, and research shows people's own attractiveness judgments also vary between photos of the same person.

Is Umax free?

Umax is free to download, but its listing says analysis results require a subscription and additional scans require an additional purchase.

Does Umax give medical advice?

No. Umax's listing says, 'We do not offer medical advice,' and asks users to consult a professional before trying something new.
