What is my skin type?
To find your skin type, wash your face with a gentle cleanser, apply nothing and wait about an hour. Shiny all over means oily, tight or flaky means dry, shiny only on the forehead, nose and chin means combination, and comfortable everywhere means normal. Each type needs a slightly different routine.

The bare-face test
One hour after washing, your skin feels…
Oily skin
- Your face looks shiny within a couple of hours of washing.
- Pores look larger, especially on the nose and cheeks.
- Makeup slides or separates during the day.
Dry skin
- Skin feels tight after washing.
- You see flaking or rough patches, often around the nose and cheeks.
- Skin looks dull or fine lines look more obvious.
Normal skin
- Skin feels comfortable a few hours after washing, neither tight nor shiny.
- Pores are small and breakouts are occasional.
- Skin rarely reacts to new products.
Combination skin
- Your forehead, nose and chin get shiny while your cheeks feel normal or tight.
- Pores are larger on the nose than on the cheeks.
- Breakouts cluster in the T-zone.
What is the blotting paper test?
Press a clean blotting sheet on different parts of your face about an hour after washing. Oil from every area points to oily skin, oil only from the forehead and nose points to combination, and little or no oil points to normal or dry skin. It is a quick check, not a diagnosis.
Is sensitive a skin type?
Sensitive skin describes how your skin reacts (stinging, redness or itching with new products), and it can come with any of the four types. If your skin is sensitive, keep routines short, choose fragrance-free products and patch test before using anything new on your face.
