What is my eye shape?

Your eye shape comes down to three things: whether you have a visible crease, how much of the iris shows, and which way the outer corners tilt. The common shapes are almond, round, hooded, monolid, upturned, downturned and deep-set. Beautify identifies your eye shape from a selfie and gives makeup tips for it.

The seven eye shapes

How to recognize each one, and the eye makeup that suits it.

  • Almond

How to tell: Longer than tall, slightly lifted outer corners, lids touch the iris at top and bottom.

Makeup: Almost anything works. A classic winged liner follows the natural lift; darker shadow on the outer corners elongates.

  • Round

How to tell: Taller than almond, with white visible above or below the iris.

Makeup: Pull liner and darker shadow out at the outer corners to elongate, keep the center of the lid lighter, and focus mascara on the outer lashes.

  • Hooded

How to tell: A crease exists but a fold of skin from the brow bone covers it when your eyes are open.

Makeup: Place crease shade slightly above the natural crease, draw wings with eyes open, and tightline instead of a thick top line.

  • Monolid

How to tell: No visible crease; the lid is smooth from lashes to brow.

Makeup: Build a soft gradient from the lash line upward, use a thicker liner that shows when eyes are open, and curl lashes well.

  • Upturned

How to tell: Outer corners sit above a line drawn through the center of both eyes.

Makeup: Balance the lift by adding shadow or liner to the outer lower lash line.

  • Downturned

How to tell: Outer corners sit below that line.

Makeup: Lift with a winged liner angled upward and keep the lower outer lash line light.

  • Deep-set

How to tell: Eyes sit further back under a prominent brow bone.

Makeup: Use lighter, shimmery shades on the lid to bring the eyes forward and keep the darkest shade just above the crease.

How do I find my eye shape?

Look straight ahead into a mirror with relaxed eyes and check three things. First, the crease: can you see it, or does skin from the brow bone cover it (hooded), or is there none at all (monolid)? Second, the iris: if white shows above or below it, your eyes are round; if the lids touch it at the top and bottom, they are closer to almond. Third, the tilt: imagine a line through the middle of both eyes. Outer corners above it are upturned, below it are downturned.

What is the difference between hooded eyes and monolids?

Hooded eyes have a crease, but a fold of skin from the brow bone covers it when your eyes are open. Monolids have no visible crease at all. Both look best with shadow taken slightly above the natural crease line so it shows when your eyes are open.

What is the difference between almond and round eyes?

Almond eyes are longer than they are tall, with slightly lifted outer corners, and the lids touch the iris at the top and bottom. Round eyes are taller, so you can see white above or below the iris. Almond eyes suit almost any liner, while round eyes look longer with liner and shadow pulled out at the outer corners.

Does eye shape change with age?

The bone structure stays the same, but skin loses firmness over time, so eyes can become more hooded or look more downturned with age. It is worth rechecking which techniques work if your makeup starts to look different.

Questions

Questions people ask

What is the most common eye shape?

Brown, almond-shaped eyes are often described as the most common combination, but eye shape varies widely and many people have a mix, such as almond and hooded.

Can an app tell my eye shape?

Yes. Beautify identifies your eye shape from a selfie as part of Your Characteristics, alongside your face shape and skin type, and gives eye makeup tips for it.

What eyeliner suits hooded eyes?

A thin line close to the lashes with a wing drawn with your eyes open, so the wing stays visible on the hood. Tightlining the upper waterline also defines the eye without taking up lid space.

Do I have hooded eyes?

If you have a crease but skin from under your brow covers most or all of your eyelid when your eyes are open, you have hooded eyes.
